If you're considering tanning there are alot of things to look for when choosing a salon. The best
thing to do is to call a few salons and inquire if they have a website and of their location. Once you decide on a few
places you should take the time to pop in and look at the facility. Here are a few questions you should ask and things
to look for when choosing a tanning salon.1.) Cleanliness: First
and foremost this is probably one of the most important items. Are you cleaning the equipment or is trained technician
sanitizing the tanning beds? Are the floors and walls surrounding the equipment clean. 2.)
Staff education: The staff at the facility should be able to tell you the appropriate tan times,
the differences in lamps and beds, as well as safe tanning practices. The staff should be friendly, February through June
most tanning salons are in full season. It may take them a moment to get to all of your questions especially over the phone
that is why going to the salon is sometimes better. 3.) Hours of Operation: Many tanning salons have seasonal hours but more importantly what are they? Do they take appointments or is it walk
in's only? Or is it both? If there is a particular bed that you like appointments may work best for you. Make sure to
ask the salon what their policy's are regarding appointments and canceling appointments if needed.
4 .) Lotion Selection: Many salons choose lotions for a reason. Ask the technician which
lotion would work best for your skin tones. The staff should be able to direct you in a the right direction. The staff member
should also be able to instruct you on the differences between tinglers, bronzers, and accelerators. 5.) Lamps: Believe it or not all lamps are not created equal. The two rays that
create a tan are UVB and UVA. UVB is the ray that begins the tanning process but an abundance can increase your chances of
burning. UVA is the ray that penetrates deeper creating a golden brown tan that lasts a little bit longer. Certain types of
skin require different levels of each. Its important that the person advising you can match you with the appropriate tan times
as well as the right bed to maximize results. Tanning lamps have a "life" unlike fluorescent lamps in a garage they
will continue to glow even though there is little to no life left to them. Lamp life varies depending on the manufacturer.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Why should I use lotion?
Never tan dry! Dry Skin requires 7-10 minutes to build melanin for a tanning
bed to be effective. Dry tanning wastes 7-10 minutes of tanning time! No outdoor lotion! Outdoor lotion is designed to protect
the body from UV rays, while indoor lotion is designed to promote the body's ability to receive UV rays. Outdoor lotions
also contain mineral oils that damage the acrylic and block the tanning power of the lamps. Outdoor lotions are forbidden
in any certified tanning salon.
What is a tingler?
A
tingler is a lotion that increases micro-circulation in the surface of the skin allowing more oxygen to flow which can help
darken a tan. Tinglers are best if used by an experienced tanner.
How often should
I tan?
We require at least 24 hours in between tanning sessions, but recommend that you wait
at least 48 hours before tanning again.
